Overbites And Underbites in Allen Park

Overbites And Underbites When the upper part of the jaw and the lower part of the jaw are not the same size, bite problems can occur. When the lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw, it is called an overbite. When the reverse is true, it is called an underbite. Another related alignment disorder is called a crossbite. Crossbites occur when lower teeth are in the wrong position. They may be incorrectly positioned sideways, forward or backward.

Malocclusion (literally ‘bad bite’) is the term used for all types of bite problems including overbites, underbites and crossbites. Jaw alignment disorders can cause a range of problems and often prohibit proper chewing and/or swallowing. Teeth can shift around in the mouth, causing even more discomfort or difficulty. Gum disease and tooth decay are also harder to prevent because proper oral hygiene can be difficult with a malocclusion. TMJ disorder can develop over time. Distorted facial shape and unattractive teeth are often the most noticeable and troubling issues for those affected.

Fortunately, there are a variety of effective treatments for bite problems. If you suspect your child has a bite misalignment, it is especially important to have them examined by a general dentistry practice as early as possible. By starting early, you can make sure they avoid years of pain and self-consciousness.

Call Szalai & Szalai DDS at 313-928-2323. Drs. Greg & Joanne Szalai, DDS are experienced in diagnosing bite disorders in patients of all ages. We can create a successful treatment plan for you. We also perform dental implants and sleep apnea and snoring treatment for Allen Park area dental clients.

Treating Bite Problems in Allen Park

Treating Bite Problems in Allen Park Malocclusions (bite problems) include overbites, underbites and crossbites. Jaw alignment disorders restrict proper chewing, talking, and swallowing. They can also cause teeth to shift around in the mouth. Allen Park cosmetic dentistry patients with bite problems are at a greater risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease because bite misalignment often makes it difficult to maintain proper oral hygiene.

When the lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw, it is called an overbite. When the situation is reversed, it is called an underbite. Crossbite occurs when lower teeth are in the wrong position.

Bite problems can cause headaches and TMJ pain. Some Allen Park dental patients with severe bite problems develop a distorted facial shape and damaged teeth.

If you suspect your toddler or older child has a bite problem, it is important to see your Allen Park general dentist as soon as possible. Bite issues and their various related problems get worse over time.

Give Me Some Air

Air Abrasion Dentists How long have dentists been drilling teeth? Would you believe 9,000 years? In an ancient graveyard in Pakistan, archaeologists unearthed skulls containing teeth that had undergone drilling. The stone-age dentists removed decay using drills constructed of sharpened flint.

Though advanced cosmetic dentistry would not be possible without drilling, the sound of a dental drill can make many Allen Park patient’s hearts pound. However, there is another way your cosmetic dentists can remove decay. This technique is known as air abrasion or drill-less dentistry. An air abrasion instrument removes material by spraying tiny aluminum oxide particles onto the tooth. The particles work like a sandblaster spraying away the affected tooth structure.

The many advantages of air abrasion make it a popular procedure for general dentistry offices. Because air abrasion is usually pain free, the need for anesthesia is reduced. The air abrasion instrument does not create vibrations or pressure. Allen Park cosmetic dentistry patients appreciate the fact that air abrasion instruments don’t produce that whiny drill sound that rings in your ears and makes your palms sweat. Because of this, air abrasion can be a less-frightening option for young dentistry patients. Air abrasion is often quicker and more precise than traditional drilling, leaving more of the healthy tooth intact.

At Szalai & Szalai DDS, we provide anxiety-free dentistry. If you would like to learn more about air abrasion or dental implant cost, call us at 313-928-2323. We are located at 5329 Allen Road in Allen Park, MI. The caring and professional staff at Szalai & Szalai DDS is dedicated to your comfort and satisfaction.

Healthy Teeth and Your Detroit Diet

Healthy Teeth and Your Detroit Diet Maintaining healthy teeth is an important concern for our local Detroit residents. As your Dentist, it’s my job to help you understand how to care for your teeth and to keep them healthy. Everyone in the Detroit knows that maintaining healthy teeth requires regular daily brushing and flossing. Regular visits to your local Detroit dental practice is also necessary to keep watch for cavities and to help you maintain proper dental hygiene. We often forget that maintaining a healthy diet can also be beneficial for the health of your teeth.

A Detroit diet that includes foods that help your muscles and bones will also help you develop healthy gums and healthy teeth. Examples of local Detroit foods to include in your diet include foods rich in vitamin B such as breads and cereals. Foods rich in vitamin C, usually fruits and vegetables, help improve the health of your gums. Zinc and magnesium are also good for the health of your teeth and are found in foods like lean beef, fish, and poultry.

All foods increase the production of saliva. Saliva is important to healthy teeth because it helps to maintain the pH balance in your mouth. Maintaining this balance helps keep your teeth and gums healthy. Foods high in fiber also encourage saliva production as does the chewing of sugar-free gum. Gum, however, can damage unhealthy teeth or pull out dental fillings, so always use caution when deciding whether to chew gum and which brand to chew.

Just as certain diet choices in the Detroit area can be beneficial to the health of your teeth, others can be detrimental. Foods and drinks that are high in sugars are more likely to form the acids that attack your teeth and result in decay. And while table sugar is often associated with the formation of cavities, other sugars such as glucose, fructose, and maltose are also causes, and are often found in juices and sodas. Limiting the consumption of sugars to mealtimes lessens the amount of time your healthy teeth are exposed.

Making good diet choices and limiting between meal sugar consumption can improve the health of your teeth and gums.

If you would like to learn how to better care for your healthy teeth in the Detroit area, contact Szalai & Szalai DDS at 313-928-2323. We would love to hear from you.

Straighten Teeth Fast in Detroit

Color BracesPoorly aligned teeth? Think it takes forever for braces to straighten them? Think again.  There are many new types of braces available in Detroit, MI. In some cases, teeth can be straightened in a few months and then, with braces off–a fantastic new smile.

If you are considering straightening your teeth, come into Allan Park Dental Care in Allen Park, MI for an orthodontic consultation. We can discuss the new type of Invisalign braces. Dr. Szalai will explain the pros and cons of each type and recommend the most effective (and quickest!) system for your teeth.

The first things most adult teeth-straightening clients ask about are the newest straightening system, sometimes called clear braces and invisible braces. Invisalign is an alternative orthodontic system popular in Allen Park and Detroit. Many of our adult orthodontic patients have been embarrassed by their crooked teeth for many years and have developed a habit of covering their mouth when they smile. It is great to see them smiling confidently after they have completed treatment.

Younger clients usually have a different attitude about braces. They seem to consider braces more like a fashion accessory and are not afraid to show them off. Teens are often interested in color braces and colored rubber bands braces. During orthodontic consultations, they usually ask about the possibility of a clear retainer to maintain teeth alignment after their braces have done their job.

Preventing Tooth Decay in Michigan

Preventing Tooth Decay in Michigan

In Michigan, tooth decay is one of the most common childhood problems, yet tooth decay also affect adults. Szalai & Szalai DDS serves people from 20 to 80 years old to help fight tooth decay.

Bacteria are a common cause of tooth decay. Bacteria live in your mouth and combine with plaque and acids to break down the enamel coating on your teeth. The breakdown of your tooth enamel can often result in the development of small holes in your teeth which are known as cavities. The breaking down of your tooth enamel in is known as tooth decay, and it is a serious dental problem for children and adults in Michigan.

Michigan tooth decay is typically a result of diet and oral hygiene choices. When sticky foods are consumed and allowed to sit on the teeth, or foods full of sugars and starches are consumed frequently throughout the day, tooth decay can result. Foods to avoid include soda and sugary chewing gum; these foods tend to stay around for a while and create an environment where bacteria thrive. To help prevent tooth decay, simply limit sugary and starchy foods between meals. Also, brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once a day, and visiting your local Allen Park dentist in Michigan for regular check ups and cleanings will help prevent tooth decay.
